Air conditioning
Many people associate air conditioning solely with cooling. In reality, modern systems can provide cooling, heat-pump heating, air circulation and year-round comfort.
Correctly specified systems can help manage warm bedrooms, home offices, conservatories and commercial spaces.
In heating mode, a reverse-cycle system transfers heat from outside air and delivers warm air into the occupied room.
Selected rooms or zones can be controlled individually, helping to avoid conditioning unused spaces.
Subject to the selected equipment, one system can provide cooling, heating, air movement and filtration.

Correct sizing matters. This table is indicative guidance only and assumes typical room conditions.
| Room area | Typical use | Indicative capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 15 m² | Small bedroom or study | 2.0 to 2.5 kW |
| 15 to 25 m² | Large bedroom or home office | 2.5 to 3.5 kW |
| 25 to 35 m² | Living room or similar | 3.5 to 5.0 kW |
| 35 to 50 m² | Large living area | 5.0 to 6.0 kW |
| 50 to 70 m² | Open-plan area | 6.0 to 7.1 kW |
| 70 to 100 m² | Large commercial area | 7.1 to 10.0 kW |
Understanding the difference
Reverse-cycle air conditioning uses heat-pump technology to transfer heat rather than generate all heat directly from purchased energy.
Transfers heat and can deliver multiple units of heat for each unit of electricity used.
Converts electricity into heat at the point of use but does not multiply the purchased energy through heat transfer.
Burns fuel to heat water for a wet central-heating system, with some losses through combustion and distribution.
The Energy Saving Trust states that heat pumps can produce three units of heat for each unit of electricity used and are more efficient than gas boilers and electric radiators.
Energy Saving Trust heat-pump guidanceEfficiency does not guarantee lower bills. Costs depend on tariffs, seasonal performance, heat demand, controls, building fabric and system sizing.
